    Overview

    The Southern California News Group has an opening for an assignment editor on our news team. In this supervisory position, the editor will work with reporters on a daily basis to develop a strong local news report. This editor will be in charge of an award-winning, collaborative and hungry newsrooms that are eager to tell stories in new ways. We want someone with a passion for beat reporting who can help reporters uncover stories that will make a big impact in the diverse communities we cover. Traditional wordsmith, organizational and collaborative skills are a must of course. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced manager in a smaller organization looking to move to the metro level. The successful candidate will be an experienced and innovative journalist who is completely comfortable with print and digital operations.

    Responsibilities

    The City Editor leads development of the best news content for the local audience. This editor’s role will be to foster the local journalistic voice and vision of the newsroom by working with reporters on a daily basis. This includes assigning and developing stories with an extra focus on those that will be unique to our newsroom such as watchdog, investigative and breaking news stories.


    This editor will be based in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune newsroom in Monrovia, CA, working at night to coordinate coverage throughout the evening across all of our 11 newsrooms.


    This editor is responsible for monitoring news as it happens, triggering breaking news plans as warranted and coordinating coverage for all platforms - digital and print. This editor will manage print production primarily, but will also be able to manage digital production for local news, push alerts and social media for the local news content as needed. This person manages daily copy flow, story placement budgets and advance planning and is sometimes the first and only read on stories produced by local news staff, and has the requisite editing skills to handle that role.


    While focusing deeply on advancing local journalism, the editor will also collaborate with other editors across SCNG on regional stories and SCNG-wide projects. This position reports to the Senior Editor for the newsroom.

    Qualifications


    • Newsroom leadership experience, including managing reporters to do their best work

    • Strong news judgment

    • Reporting, writing and editing skills, including knowledge of AP style

    • Basic understanding of SEO and how to leverage it to build audience for our content

    • Basic understanding of social media

    • Basic knowledge of and ability to assign digital enhancements. Deep understanding of the use of print graphics and other story elements

    • Basic knowledge of analytics and how to use them in digital decision making

    • Understanding of fair use, copyright laws and media ethics. Knowledge of social media terms of service
