    Overview

If you get a dozen newsletters in your inbox every morning and think as much about how they’re designed and marketed as about what they actually say, this may be the role for you. We need someone who understands the power of newsletters both to inform and to attract people to digital subscriptions to our coverage.

We’re the San Francisco Bay Area’s premier news organization, serving more than 7 million people in nine counties. In this role, you’ll be a key player in building new business models for journalism at a time when the role of the press in American society is more vital than ever. #BANG #Mid-Senior level

    Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll manage our newsletters (such as those at https://www.eastbaytimes.com/newsletters and https://www.mercurynews.com/newsletters), to analyze and improve them, build new ones, retire old ones and make each more effective at getting people to our content. You’ll use our data, your own research, user feedback and industry best practices to make newsletters a powerful tool for acquiring and retaining digital subscribers. You’ll be expected to:

    • Work closely with our local and corporate teams on product design, analytics and marketing.
    • Work closely with our newsroom leaders and individual journalists to guide them on how best to make newsletters engaging and what new ones we should try.
    • Use our email management program and analytics tools to manage newsletter formats, content, delivery schedules and optimization.
    • Work with, support and inspire others on the team so that your newsletters are crucial parts of our customer journeys from awareness to registration, subscription and retention.

    Qualifications

If you’re the right candidate, your experience, interviews and reference checks will convince us that you have a powerful mix of three things:

    • The ability to manage a product, think creatively about how to market and improve it, do that work yourself and inspire, lead and manage others to do it.
    • An understanding of the role of journalism in our society and the unique financial pressure the industry faces, perhaps through experience at a media company.
    • A combination of passion, aggressiveness, creativity, empathy and humility that allows you to get things done effectively while working with a team of people who have diverse skills in a company where this initiative is brand new and just getting off the ground.
    • We also would expect that you have a college degree in marketing, communications, business, journalism or related fields and 4 to 8 years of experience in similar positions.
