    The Southern California News Group (SCNG) is seeking an experienced editor to oversee editorial and opinion content for the 11 titles we publish, which include The Orange County Register, Los Angeles Daily News, The Press-Enterprise and The (San Bernardino County) Sun. Our opinion editor leads our editorial board and works closely with the publisher and executive editor to develop our opinion strategy and to formulate and convey the group’s editorial positions.  This is a senior editor-level position and reports to the publisher and executive editor. #scng #Mid-Senior level


    SCNG’s opinion editor heads up our editorial board, which includes staff opinion writers and contributing editors. The opinion editor is responsible for determining the group’s editorial position on local, state and national issues and developing editorials to support those positions. The opinion editor also cultivates and maintains a diverse network of contributing editors and writers to ensure our opinion content is wide-ranging, engaging and thought-provoking.


    Day-to-day duties include running editorial board meetings, writing and editing editorials, developing and editing op-ed pieces from thought leaders and community stakeholders, representing our publications at public events and speaking in front of community groups.


    We are seeking an ambitious, audience-oriented editor who believes in promoting public discourse, effecting change in public policy and ensuring that government is accountable to the public. This is a job for someone who relishes a good debate, has a passion for civics and who wants, above all, to make a difference. A good candidate is also well-versed in social media and digital analytics, which are critical to our audience-development expectations.


    Required skills

    • Five or more years of experience in professional news management roles.
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or related field.
    • Strong writing skills, especially persuasive writing.
    • Excellent editing ability, including knowledge of AP style.
    • Thorough knowledge of current events, politics.
    • Strong understanding of social media and knowledge of how to use it.
    • Basic knowledge of analytics and how to use them in digital decision making.
