    Overview

The Southern California News Group is looking for web-savvy journalists who embrace technology, can write headlines that win audiences on Facebook, love to imagine creative ways we can use the web to tell stories and know what modern news presentation ought to look like on a mobile device.

We’re pretty proud of our journalism -- from investigations that win Pulitzer Prizes to breaking news that outpaces our competitors. What we need are some clever digital producers to pull it all together into top-quality presentation for SCNG’s 11 sites, including the Orange County Register and LA Daily News. Producers help our journalism reach its widest audience, including sharpening headlines, curating mobile feeds/home pages and packaging content that engages our audience with immersive storytelling, interactive graphics, photos and videos.  #scng #Associate

    Responsibilities

In this job, you should be able to apply a deep understanding of search and social user behavior to help our work be surfaced on those platforms. Breaking news is a top priority, as well as being able to manage push and email alerts as needed. You will be asked to look at analytics to spot opportunities and think strategically about how to take advantage of them.

You will use news editing skills to curate national news of the day for home and section pages, as well as finding the best content from our regional network of newsrooms and other sources relevant to our audience. You might create a newsletter or compile a feed for an Alexa skill.

Our digital producers are often the first and only read on stories during overnight and early morning shifts, and should have the requisite news judgment and editing skills to run the show responsibly.

    What you’ll learn:

    • How to compete in one of the country’s most diverse and saturated media markets
    • How to collaborate. We talk constantly about the best way to do our jobs sometimes in formal brainstorming sessions, but usually on Slack, Google docs, text or email. You’ll learn to work just as effectively and efficiently with people who aren’t in the room as with people who are
    • We present formal training for staff about every six weeks. Sometimes it’s a technical skill like how to use WordPress better. Sometimes it’s a soft skill like how to protect yourself from online bullies. We also send people to conferences and workshops to bring back fresh ideas

    Who you’ll work with:

    • We have a team of more than 200 journalists working from 11 newsrooms across Southern California. A few have won Pulitzer Prizes. Some are just starting out. A few grew up in the communities they cover. Some are still learning that the West Coast is the best coast. What we have in common is a belief that local journalism is important and we’re all doing our part to change the world for the better

What we like about working here, as told by people who work here:

    • If I have an idea, I can make a case for it and lead its creation
    • Opportunity to be heard by higher ups
    • Direct impact on communities
    • Ownership over what our future looks like
    • The people I work with
    • Opportunity to learn and grow
    • Get to do things and be involved in things I may not get the opportunity to do other places
    • We get to invent things every day
    • I know what’s happening all the time in the world and around me
    • We debate and learn from each other

    Qualifications

    • Strong understanding of social media and knowledge of how to use it to manage core accounts on Twitter and Facebook as well as listening to and curating social conversations.
    • Basic knowledge of analytics and how to use them in digital decision making or spotting opportunities.
    • Understanding of fair use, copyright laws and media ethics. Emphasis on knowledge regarding social media terms of service.
    • Strong computer skills and understanding of how to use smartphones for reporting

    Bonus skills

    • Some experience writing HTML
    • Experience with data analysis and visualizations
    • Experience with WordPress
    • Ability to create and edit video
    • Newsletter skills
    • App development skills
