    Overview

    The Times-Standard is located in Northern California in the coastal city of Eureka.  Just north of Eureka is Arcata where the Humboldt State University is located. Eureka is a small town but big in outdoor adventures for you and your family. The Times-Standard continues to provide effective advertising with fully integrated multimedia solutions for our advertisers. We provide online, print, and mobile advertising solutions to businesses on a local, regional, and national level. The Night Content Editor position ensures all print and digital content is readable, accurate and ready for posting to the Times-Standard web page, and and/or any ancillary products, includign Facebook posts, and breaking news stories for the web page.  This position also contributescontent and work as part of the team in the newsroom.#NorCal #Mid-Senior level

    Responsibilities

    1. Assist the Managing Editor in all matters pertaining to the quality and smooth operation of the Times-Standard.
    2. Oversees night time content production of the newspaper, copy editing stories, headlines, cutlines, and double checking for duplicate AP stories.
    3. Works with the design hub to ensure the speedy, smooth, and accurate production of the all pages to assure all deadlines are met.
    4. Responsible for checking pages and proofs throughout the night for errors and work to correct them.
    5. Check all stories, headlines and captions for accuracy, fit, sense, and spelling. Rewrite ill-fitting and bad headlines and ensure that the design hub corrects them.
    6. Make sure that jumps and jumpheads exist and direct the reader to the right page.
    7. Make sure that every photo has a photo credit.
    8. Check date, page number, and folio on every page.
    9. Write headlines for standalone photo packages.
    10. Write front page and Page A2 promos.
    11. Editing and proofreading of breaking news copy.
    12. Contact the Assistant Managing Editor or Managing Editor after hours in the event of any unforeseen or unresolvable issue.
    13. Ensure that stories are posted to and appear on the website and social media in a timely manner. Edit any online version of the story so that it is chronologically consistent with the time of its online publication, ie, will “today” for print appear as “today” online?
    14. Supply, edit, and correct copy in special section content.
    15. Write a minimum of one story/column per week for publication in the Times Standard.
    16. Other duties as assigned.

     

    Qualifications

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

    1. News writing/editing skills.
    2. Knowledge of Associated Press Style guidelines.
    3. Word processing and computer skills required.
    4. Able to handle deadlines and work as a team player.
    5. College degree preferred in Journalism, Communications, English.
    6. Minimum of two years professional newspaper experience also preferred.

     

    MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:        BA in Journalism, English or related field

    Experience:       Prior News room experience a plus
