    The Southern California News Group and Bay Area News Group (part of Digital First Media) are teaming up to take our digital subscription initiatives to the next level and we need your help. Our group of news publications includes some of the premier local news websites in California such as the San Jose Mercury News, Orange County Register and LA Daily News. This position would be based in Southern California. #SCNG #Associate


    We are looking for someone to take ownership of email and newsletters to fully realize our opportunities with this medium.  This individual will work on a California-wide digital subscription team while collaborating with management in marketing, circulation and editorial to craft an email strategy to drive site traffic, user loyalty and subscription. They should have a working knowledge of digital marketing, audience development, analytics, social media and, especially, email.


    His/Her primary responsibility is be our in-house expert on everything email from big idea strategies to technical minutiae. This person will also be expected to measure the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns as it relates to digital subscription growth and identify new opportunities. They also must be comfortable working with external third-party organizations and across different departments in the organization.


    Who you’ll work with:

    A small, motivated team of individuals hyper-focused on growing digital subscriptions including a director of digital subscriptions, acquisition managers in northern and southern California, retention managers, and a product strategist.  This is a new team with the opportunity to be creative and build a new business model to support quality local journalism into the future.


    Core functions:

    • Build general editorial newsletter strategy and work with local properties to help manage their newsletters.
    • Work closely with our newsroom leaders and individual journalists to guide them on how best to make newsletters engaging and what new ones we should try.
    • Align email messaging and infrastructure across various departments.
    • Manage list hygiene, segments, drip campaigns and email templates.
    • Track and measure effectiveness of campaigns.
    • Conduct research to better understand target audiences and leverage intelligence gathering to construct effective messaging.


    Skills Desired:

    • Ability to manage multiple projects on deadlines.
    • Clear communicator that can share findings, recommendations and strategy within the organization.
    • Comfortable working in a newsroom as well as marketing.
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Basic analytic skills.
    • Motivation to take ownership over projects and outcomes.
    • A team player who doesn’t mind working independently or as part of a group.
    • Experience working with email platforms and managing emails lists.



    • 1-5 years working in digital marketing, digital subscriptions or email product management.
    • Experience working for a media or news organization preferred.
